Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions without finding common denominators by hand. Every answer is reduced to lowest terms and shown as a mixed number and a decimal.
To add or subtract fractions, each one is rewritten over a common denominator — the product of the two denominators — then the numerators are combined. Multiplication is simpler: multiply straight across, numerators and denominators. Division flips the second fraction and multiplies.
The raw answer is then reduced to lowest terms by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. When the result is an improper fraction (numerator larger than the denominator), it is also shown as a mixed number, the format US recipes and carpentry measurements use.
Worked examples
Adding fractions
3/4 + 2/3 = 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12.
→ 1 5/12 ≈ 1.4167
Multiplying
2/5 × 3/8 = 6/40, which reduces to 3/20.
→ 3/20 = 0.15
Dividing
1/2 ÷ 3/4 flips the second fraction: 1/2 × 4/3 = 4/6.
→ 2/3 ≈ 0.6667
